In July 2001, Palm announced that it would form a wholly owned Palm OS subsidiary. The formation of the subsidiary, called PalmSource, Inc., was completed in January 2002, providing a complete internal separation of Palm's device and operating system businesses. Under the new corporate structure, Palm, Inc., through its Solutions Group, is licensing the Palm OS platform as the foundation for its industry-leading Palm handhelds.
