In honour of this jubilee, Prof. Dr. Karl Zander, the founding father of FOKUS, takes the opportunity to look back at developments and events which led to the founding of FOKUS. Ten years of FOKUS history required fifteen years of preparation. This 25-year period encompasses the breath-taking pace of development in electronic data processing and the history of the creation and evolution of new philosophies in regard to information technology together with network science and technology. The most important development was the evolution from "closed" systems, created by a single manufacturer, to "open" communication architectures based on the multi-vendor principle using standardised interfaces.

Telecommunications Research Center Vienna (FTW)
The ftw. Forschungszentrum Telekommunikation Wien (Telecommunications Research Center Vienna) was founded in 1999 and implements cooperation between science and industry following a new and challenging approach. Our partners are three departments from Vienna University of Technology, a number of well-known telecommunications companies (network operators and telecom manufacturers), some smaller enterprises and the Austrian Research Center Seibersdorf. As a part of the K plus programme, ftw. is co-financed by the Austrian Government and the City of Vienna, which have granted 107 Million ATS for the first 4 years. Approximately the same amount will be financed by the participating companies.
